Bachelor of Optometry Bachelor of Science (BOptom BSc)

The BOptom BSc program trains future optometric practitioners, vision researchers and teachers and is taken over five years of full-time study. The program cannot be undertaken part-time or externally.

Stage 1 covers the foundation sciences of chemistry, physics, anatomy and introductory optics.

Stages 2 and 3 explore the applied sciences of physiology, vision science, psychology and ocular disease. You are introduced to clinical optometry skills from the beginning of stage 2.

Stage 4 develops problem solving, clinical skills and patient management strategies.

Stage 5 integrates knowledge and skills using clinical placements and external rotations. Recent legislative changes have allowed optometrists to use topical therapeutic drugs for the treatment of some eye diseases.

Bachelor of Science (BSc)- major in Vision Science

Stage 1 consists of the foundation sciences of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology plus introductory courses in ocular anatomy and optics.

Stage 2 deepens your understanding of vision science by exploring ocular physiology, psychophysics, neuroscience, optics and ocular disease. Your choice of minor courses will allow you to individualise your study plan to suit your particular interests.

Stage 3 introduces advanced topics in vision science and optics allowing you to decide what areas of research and development might offer the best future opportunities. The major strength of this study plan is its ability to let you explore a wide range of topic areas and develop a unique set of marketable skills and abilities.

A stimulating Stage 4 Honours program is available for students who would like to develop a wider range of research skills. Progression to Stage 4 is subject to academic performance. Students seeking to enrol in Stage 4 are required to have the approval of the Head of School, to have successfully completed all courses in the program and to have attained a minimum of a Credit average in each stage of the program.
