By Coursework

The Master of Optometry (MOptom), Graduate Diploma in Optometry (GradDip) and the Graduate Certificate in Optometry (GradCert) are coursework postgraduate programs, with a comprehensive range of courses intended to appeal to new and established practitioners. Many of the courses have been designed using a variety of teaching methods. It is a specific aim of the School to provide further education for optometrists in country areas and states that are physically remote from an Optometry School. To this end, some courses are offered in a multi-modal format. It is the School's intention to offer more courses in these modes in the future. In this way, we intend to make them accessible to practising optometrists who wish to obtain further qualifications, as well as those who would like an update on specific topics as part of continuing professional education. Candidates may enrol in a full postgraduate coursework program, individual courses or even parts of some courses for professional continuing education purposes.

The MOptom, GradDip and GradCert are offered on a full-time or part-time basis and consist mainly of coursework with an optional research component. There are no compulsory courses but pre-requisites, co-requisites and exclusions may apply. The MOptom and GradDip can be completed in one year of full-time study, or in two or more* years of part-time study#. The GradCert can be completed in six months of full-time study, or in one or more* years of part-time study#.

#International students are required to maintain full-time enrolment to satisfy visa requirements.

In addition, courses may be taken individually as non-award and may be later incorporated into a program (providing they make up no more than half). In this way, study may be carried out in smaller commitments over a longer period of time*.

*There is a maximum time limit - contact the Postgraduate Administrative Assistant for details.

Graduate Diploma by Research in Optometry (GradDipRes)

The School has recently introduced a Graduate Diploma by Research (GradDipRes). The Graduate Diploma by Research in Optometry offers graduates, with at least a three-year Optometry degree, training and experience in scientific research, and specialised training in aspects of Optometry. The program comprises 48 units of credit, 24 of which are to be gained by completion of two research projects (12 units of credit each) and 24 by coursework. Individual courses comprise 3, 6 or 12 UOC. A number of the courses have prerequisites, corequisites or exclusions, as indicated in the course descriptions. It is expected that the Diploma will allow entry to a higher research degree program, for those students without an Honours degree. Candidates anticipating progression to a higher research degree should consult with their supervisor, to ensure an appropriate choice of courses for their chosen field of study. The range of courses available is identical to those offered in the MOptom program. The program may be completed on a full-time (two sessions duration) or part-time (four sessions duration) basis. Candidates must be based on campus.

The School offers the following courses for the MOptom, GradDip, GradCert and GradDipRes, and for continuing education.

It is important to note that not all courses will be offered each year. Courses only run subject to sufficient enrolment numbers. The School reserves the right to cancel courses because of insufficient enrolments.
