PROJECT OVERVIEW

The delivery of quality vision care in both Australia and New Zealand is facing many challenges.  High on the list are the inequitable spread of optometrists between cities and rural regions and the well-documented health concerns of an ageing population.

The UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science, in collaboration with the Departments of Optometry and Vision Science at the Universities of Auckland and Melbourne, and the QUT School of Optometry, is coordinating an investigation into potential strategies to address these service inadequacies through improvements to the undergraduate optometry education experience.

The project aims to benchmark approaches to learning and teaching for students of optometry in Australia and New Zealand, with a focus on the essential requirements for the preparation, attraction and retention of graduate optometrists to remote area practice and provision of service for the elderly and low vision patients.

The project is funded under a grant awarded by the Australian Learning & Teaching Council. It runs from January 2009 through to January 2010.
